How to Open the Restore Manager

The Restore Manager can be used if you already have Carbonite installed or if you need to install Carbonite and restore. If you are unsure as to whether or not Carbonite is installed, you can check your Windows notification area or your Start Menu for Carbonite.

Please choose the scenario that best fits your situation:

Carbonite is already installed on your PC:

Lock Icon

First, open the Carbonite InfoCenter by double-clicking the Carbonite lock icon in your Windows notification area.

Note: If you do not see the Carbonite lock, it may be hidden. Click the Show hidden icons button ( < ) to view the Carbonite lock. By default Windows 7 hides the Carbonite lock icon. Click the Show hidden icons button ( ^ ) to view any hidden icons.

The Carbonite icon above indicates that your backup is frozen in place for safekeeping. If your icon is not the same as the one above, please right-click the Carbonite lock icon and select Freeze my Backup.

If Carbonite is NOT installed on your PC:

Go to https://www.carbonite.com/Manage/restore.aspx and log in using your email address and Carbonite password. Continue to follow the prompts on the screen. When you have successfully installed Carbonite on your new or repaired PC, you will be taken to the Restore Manager.

Click here to learn how to use the Restore Manager to help you restore your files. If you do not wish to restore your backup, click Cancel to exit the Restore Manager, and you can restore your files at a later time using the instructions for If Carbonite is already installed on your PC.

How to Use the Restore Manager

The Restore Manager guides you through a simple process to restore your backed up files.

Restore Manager: Preparing Your Restore

First, Carbonite automatically scans your system for user accounts on your current computer that match user accounts which you backed up with Carbonite. Ensure that all the software that you normally use is installed, otherwise you will not be able to open your restored files.

Once it is finished scanning, Carbonite automatically proceeds to the next step. If you have closed and reopened the Restore Manager, please click the Next button.

Note: If you only see three steps while running the Restore Manager, please proceed to the next step.

Choose Your Restore Method

This gives you the option to have Carbonite decide where to restore your files to, or to restore your files to a different user name.

Restore Manager: Choose Your Restore Method

By default Carbonite will automatically restore your files to a location on your computer and create accounts if they do not exist. Click Next to choose the order that Carbonite restores files.

If you click the Change restore settings link, you can map where you would like your files restored.

Restore Manager: Map Your Restored Files

If you choose to change your restore settings, you will be able to map to the location you would like your backed up files restored. Otherwise, please skip this step and proceed to the next one.

Use the listboxes to choose the destinations of the files and the checkboxes to choose whether you would like those files to be restored.

When you are satisfied with your choices, click Next to proceed to deciding on your restore priority.

Restore Manager: Change your restore priority

In this screen you are given the option to have certain files restore first or to let Carbonite decide which files to restore.

Selecting Yes, let me select some files to restore first, opens a search window for you to locate files to restore first. Otherwise, the restore will proceed using Carbonite's default selections.

When you are satisfied with your choice, click Next to review your selections.

Restore Manager: Review your selections

In this screen you can change any of your selections that were made previously by clicking the link after the selection.

When you are satisfied with your choices, click Next to start your restore.

Restore

This screen shows the status of your restore with two progress bars.

Restore Manager: Your Restore Is In Progress

Now that your restore has started, you can view the status through this screen.
The Restore Manager gives you two progress bars to show the status of the restore. When the restore first starts, Carbonite restores the folders to your computer in order to place your files in them later. After the folders have been restored, you will see your files begin to restore.

Once the restore is complete, the Restore Manager will move to the final step.

After your restore has started, Carbonite recommends that you keep your computer on and that your backup remains frozen in place for safekeeping until your restore has completed. Your restore may take time to complete.

Note: If you wish to adjust your computer's hibernate and sleep settings to ensure your computer remains powered, click here.

Verify

Your restore has completed and you can view where the files have been restored.

Restore Manager: Your restore has completed

This is the final step in the Restore Manager process. You are shown, numerically, all of the files that have been restored to your computer. You can search for restored files, view a printable report of your restore, which details what was restored and to where, and view all the files that were restored.

We at Carbonite are always looking for ways to improve our restore process for our customers. To leave feedback, please click the Please take a minute to give us feedback... link, and we would be happy to hear your thoughts.

Once you are done with the restore, click Done and you will be asked if you would like to resume your backup and exit the Restore Manager.

Restore Manager: Resume Your Backup

Here you are asked if you are ready for Carbonite to start backing up your files again.

If you would like to unfreeze your backup and start backing up your computer again, mark the checkbox that you understand about Carbonite's deletion policy and click Yes.

Otherwise, click No, and your backup will remain frozen in place for safekeeping.
